Chikungunya

Chikungunya is non-fatal viral disease transmitted by Aedes mosquito. Both Ae aegypti and Ae. albopictus are involved in transmission. High mosquito density during the post-monsoon season increases the disease’s transmission. It resembles dengue fever.

Chikungunya usually starts with sudden fever, chills, headache, nausea, vomiting, joint pain, rash and arthralgia. Humans are thought to be the major source, or reservoir, of chikungunya virus for mosquitoes.

In India, the states affected by chikungunya are Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Gujarat and Kerala.
